What is Mr. Darlow's view on the devices that are used to calibrate computer monitors for adjusting color on the display to match output to print? Any recommendations for hardware?

What knowledge and experience can an ex-darkroom guy like myself take with him over to the digital side of printing that might help produce finer prints?

What are the pitfalls of not caring about calibration and hating the idea of managing my own printer and ink? When is it more trouble than it's worth? Aren't professional services like MPix and BayPhoto going to acheive better results for most people? I only have one Black and White Lazer printer plugged in and I am happy with local printing only being used for text documents.

I've been listening to Typical Shutterbug since inception and read several photoblogs but have yet to invest in a camera: my iPhone is my tool right now. I intend to invest in a camera within the next 6-months, a new laptop and, for a newbie, can you recommend where to begin to learn digitally editing photos. Such as what type of consumer-end photo editing software programs I should consider investing in (photoshop, iPhoto, Aperture, etc). I prefer to learn before I purchase, because for me, it is more about the experience rather than the end product.

    Many thanks,
    Scott

My question relates to resolution of items sent to printer. I know I should speak in terms of PPI, but I find this all confusing, no matter how much I read on the subject. Photoshop tells me dpi, so I use that. What is the lowest resolution (measured in dpi, I guess) that I should send to my printer? I've heard 150, 200, 250. I tend to stay at 300, because I know it will work; and ink is expensive, but the printer chokes on the big files sometimes. Presently I'm printing to either an HP 8550 (13x19" or 9x12 prints) or an Epson R340 (older). I'm about to set up an Artisan 800. (My library will no longer do exhibits with small prints, so I have to print as big as I can.)

I have always shot in sRGB color space. I am reading Ken Rockwell's helpful manual on the D300 (just received the D300s for my birthday), and he recommends shooting in sRGB. I find what he says persuasive: if you are not printing your own photos then stick with sRGB, as it actually gives you better all-around color (my paraphrasing).

Everyone else hypes Adobe RGB. I mean everyone.

    What is your take? Thanks.
